​Used for drainage and storage of gas and fluid in the thoracic cavity, including pneumothorax, pleural effusion, empyema, abdominal ascites, and pericardial effusion. 
Chest closed drainage is required for conditions such as pneumothorax, pleural effusion, and hemothorax. The water seal bottle serves the main purpose of isolating the chest cavity from the outside air. Without a water seal bottle, air from the outside can enter the chest cavity, leading to iatrogenic pneumothorax.
